History

The Global Montessori Academy began in 1984 as the Plaza Light School. The School opened with 17 school-aged children and one full-time teacher. Parent volunteers served as support staff. The Plaza Light School operated under the umbrella of the Unity Church until August 31, 1990, when the Unity Board of Directors decided to close the School. The Parents then came together and decided that the program was too important to the community to let it dissolve. They incorporated into an IRS-approved "501(c)(3)" not-for-profit Family Cooperative for the purposes of organization, ownership and government, and have been operating as Global Montessori Academy since September 1, 1990.

GMA today has grown to include toddler and preschool students as well as offering extended care programs before and after normal school hours.

The Family Cooperative is led by the Board of Directors, which is made up of parents, a staff representative and the Director of the school.
